Story behind the coffee

This coffee is produced by over 1,300 small-scale farmers in partnership with Huye Washing Station, which was founded by David Rubanzangabo – a pioneer in Rwanda’s specialty coffee sector. David’s journey began as an agronomist for the National Coffee Board and led to a key role in The Pearl Project, where he helped elevate the quality of Rwanda’s coffee.

In 2012 he built Huye Mountain Washing Station – today an organically run business and independent exporter. David works closely with producers in the region, ensuring fair compensation and training in modern methods.

This lot reflects Rwanda's unique terroir: high altitudes, cooler nights and a precisely washed coffee that gets its fruitiness, sweetness and balance from meticulous processes and genuine commitment.

This is how our coffee is made

1. The Origin

The coffee is grown by around 1,300 small-scale farmers in Huye, southern Rwanda, at altitudes between 1,700 and 2,200 meters above sea level. The region consists of seven growing zones, where David and his team support growers with knowledge, logistics and fair conditions.

2. Harvesting & processing

Harvested early in the morning, the berries are left to rest overnight and then undergo a final steeping step of 5–6 hours, which adds extra clarity to the flavour. The moist parchments are then sorted and dried on African beds for 7–14 days.

3. Drying & quality control

The process is completely in-house at Huye – from washing station to its own dry mill, giving full control over quality. The coffee is carefully sorted and separated into smaller lots to ensure traceability.

4. Roasting

This coffee is filter roasted, where the roast profile highlights elegant notes of plum jam, black tea and dark berries, with a dark chocolate-like aftertaste.
