"How often should you clean your espresso machine?"
This is something that we at Barista Espresso have often received questions about.
You have just purchased an expensive espresso machine and want to jump right into brewing espresso but quickly realize that the machine gets easily dirty after a few uses from ground coffee residues, milk, etc. After a longer period of use, deposits of limescale and "Scale" form, which are remnants of minerals that build up in the internal components and hoses. About If this is not removed through regular cleaning, the machine's performance and the taste of the coffee will drastically decline and eventually lead to mechanical problems About if not addressed. Therefore, regular cleaning is important!
This applies to all of Sage espresso machine models:
- Barista Express
- Duo temp (Pro)
- Bambino Plus
- Barista Pro
- Barista Touch
- Dual Boiler
- Oracle
- Oracle Touch
What cleaning agents are available for the espresso machine? To clean an espresso machine, cleaning tablets, descaling agents, milk cleaning solutions, and regular water filter changes are used.
#1 Cleaning Tablets
After a number of brews, the machine will notify you when it is time to clean with cleaning tablets. Cleaning tablets remove coffee oils and residues. Keeps the machine in good condition and maintains the good taste of the coffee. On Barista Express, there is a light called "Clean me" and on the pro model, a text appears on the screen saying "Flush". All machines have different ways to remind you, but all have a pre-programmed cleaning program that should be started with the cleaning tablet in place. See the user manual. About If the machine is not cleaned with tablets, the performance and taste of your coffee will deteriorate.
#2 Descaling Agent
After several cycles of heating and cooling, limescale and "Scale" form in the system, which leads to a bitter aftertaste in your coffee and lowers the machine's performance. We recommend cleaning with descaling agent once a month. A ready-made cleaning program is available in the machines; read the user manual.
# Milk Cleaning
About if you love to drink latte or cappuccino regularly, cleaning the steam wand for milk frothing is a must! After many About times of milk frothing, limescale and old milk can form in the system. To keep your steam wand in top condition, we recommend blowing out with steam after each use and wiping the steam wand from milk residue with a damp cloth to prevent the milk from burning onto it. We recommend cleaning the steam wand with milk cleaner at least every other month or even once a month. See the user manual for instructions.
# Water filter
We always recommend using well-filtered water for espresso brewing for the best results. However, most people who buy an espresso machine do not go to the extent of installing an additional filter system to their kitchen faucet, and therefore it is extra important to change the water filter in the machine regularly! The harder the water, the worse it is for the machine and the faster the filter becomes dirty. We recommend changing the filter at least once every three months.
