Maintenance

How to look after your Bambino Plus

Sage machines have built-in programmes for cleaning and descaling and tell you when it is time. Run the cleaning cycle with a tablet, descale when the display asks you to and replace the Claris filter every three months. Here is the schedule and the products we recommend.

Good to know about the Sage Bambino Plus

Cleaning after 200 extractions

After 200 extractions the machine asks to be cleaned. Place a cleaning tablet on the cleaning disc in the portafilter and run the programme.

How to tell it needs descaling

When the 1 CUP/STEAM and 2 CUP buttons flash alternately for 15 seconds, it is time to descale.

Replace the water filter after 3 months

Sage recommends replacement after 3 months or 40 litres, which also reduces the need for descaling.

  1. Every day
    • Wipe and purge the steam wand after every use
    • Rinse the portafilter and basket
    • Wipe the shower screen, empty the drip tray
  2. Every week
    • Clear the steam tip and soak it in milk system cleaner
    • Wash the drip tray and water tank
    • Run the cleaning cycle when CLEAN ME or FLUSH is shown
  3. Every month
    • Cleaning cycle with a Sage cleaning tablet
    • Descale when DESCALE is shown (Sage specifies every month for the Barista Express)
    • Clean the grinder on models with a built-in grinder
  4. Every 3 months
    • Replace the Claris water filter
    • Check the silicone gasket in the group
    • Replace the gasket and shower screen when needed

Water and filters

The right water protects your machine

Sage machines should be descaled with the descaling programme when the display shows DESCALE or when you see limescale in the tank. How often depends on the water hardness; Sage specifies every month for the Barista Express. Remove the water filter before descaling and only put it back after rinsing.
The target is 2–4 °dH. Replace the Claris filter every three months to reduce the need for descaling. Do not use distilled water.
