Leaks: step-by-step troubleshooting

Leaking around the portafilter
Almost always a worn group gasket, or coffee on the gasket. Brush the gasket with a group head cleaning brush. If that does not help: replace the group gasket and shower screen. Also check that the basket is the right size and not overfilled.
Water in the drip tray while the machine warms up
On heat exchanger and dual boiler machines it is normal for a little water or steam to come out while the machine warms up: the water expands and is released through the expansion valve, and the vacuum breaker valve hisses until it closes. More than about a decilitre (100 ml), or if it continues once the machine is hot, points to a leaking vacuum breaker valve or a boiler auto-fill that does not shut off. Contact a service centre.
The steam wand or hot water valve drips
Worn valve seals. See steam and hot water valves.
Water under the machine
- First check the drip tray: is it full or not seated properly?
- The tank may be cracked or sitting at an angle.
- If the water is coming from inside: switch off and unplug the machine immediately. A leaking hose, fitting or boiler must be repaired by a technician.
Steam is hissing out of the machine
If the safety valve on the boiler is releasing steam, the pressure is too high. Switch off the machine and contact a service centre.
