Steam and hot water valves: maintenance, leaks and stiff knobs

Daily care

Purge the steam wand before and after each use and wipe it straight away with a microfibre cloth. Soak the steam tip in Cafetto MFC milk system cleaner every week. Close the valve gently; overtightening wears out the seal.

The steam wand or hot water valve drips

  • Drips all the time, even when the machine is cold: the valve seal (gasket or valve stem) is worn. Replace the valve seals; they are in the exploded diagram under Steam and hot water on the spare parts page.
  • Drips only when the machine is hot: the seal does not close fully when the metal expands, or there is limescale on the sealing surface. Replace the seal and check the water hardness.
  • A little condensation at the start of warm-up: normal, the vacuum breaker valve closes as pressure builds up.

The knob or joystick is stiff

The valve stem has lost its grease or has limescale deposits. Let the machine cool down, take the valve apart as described in the manual, then clean and lubricate the stem with food-grade silicone grease. Replace the seals at the same time.

The knob squeaks

Same cause as above: a dry valve stem. Lubricate it.

Weak steam despite pressure on the gauge

  • The holes in the steam tip are clogged with milk or limescale. Unscrew the tip, soak it in Cafetto MFC milk system cleaner and clear the holes with a needle.
  • You have just brewed several cups or drawn a lot of hot water. Give the boiler a minute to recover pressure.

The pressure gauge shows 0 and there is no steam

The boiler is not heating. See no heat.

The steam pressure fluctuates a lot

A pressurestat normally fluctuates by a few tenths of a bar. Large fluctuations or pressure above about 1.5 bar can be caused by a worn or scaled-up pressurestat and should be checked by a technician. If the safety valve is venting: switch off the machine and contact a service centre.
