Temperature and taste: too hot, too cold or inconsistent
Oct 03, 2026
The group head does not get hot
- E61 groups need 15–20 minutes. Wait before you start troubleshooting.
- There may be air in the thermosiphon. Run a cup of water through the group and let the machine heat up again.
- Limescale in the thermosiphon pipes stops the circulation. This requires a service.
The espresso is too hot, bubbly or bitter
On heat exchanger machines: do a cooling flush before you brew. On PID machines: lower the temperature by 1–2 degrees. Very fresh coffee (less than a week after roasting) also bubbles more.
The espresso is too cold
- Preheat your cups, ideally on the cup warmer or with hot water.
- You are flushing too much. Only flush until it stops hissing.
- The group has not finished warming up.
The temperature varies a lot
- Heat exchanger machines vary more than dual boilers. A consistent routine (the same cooling flush every time) gives the most consistent results.
- On machines with a pressurestat, you can have a technician adjust the boiler pressure.
- Limescale in the boiler reduces heating performance. Check your water hardness.
