Dual boiler and PID: temperature, warm-up and ECO

A dual boiler has one boiler for the brew water and one for steam. The PID control lets you set the temperature precisely and get the same result every day.

What the PID does

The PID controller measures the temperature in the boiler and doses the heat in small steps, instead of switching on and off at fixed limits like a pressurestat. The result is a stable temperature to within a degree or so. The display usually shows the boiler temperature, not the water temperature at the shower screen.

Setting the temperature

Start at 92–94 °C and change 1 degree at a time to taste. Light roasts can take more heat, dark roasts less. Factory settings and ranges on some models:

  • Rocket R58: coffee boiler 92 °C (65–105 °C), steam boiler 123 °C (110–126 °C). The steam boiler can be switched off if you only make espresso.
  • Profitec Ride: brew 92 °C, steam 128 °C (115–134 °C).
  • Profitec Pro 300: coffee boiler 93 °C. Press + and – at the same time until t1 appears, then press + and change the value. The steam boiler is controlled by a pressurestat (1.0–1.3 bar) and is switched on and off with its own switch.

Offset and PID parameters: some controllers have parameters for offset or P, I and D. Do not change them without instructions from the manufacturer or from us; they affect how the machine heats up and holds its temperature.

If the coffee tastes too sour or burnt, see Temperature and taste.

Warm-up

The boiler reaches the set point faster than the group heats through. Trust the time, not just the display.

  • Profitec Pro 300: about 6.5 minutes to boiler temperature (230 V).
  • Profitec Drive and Ride with Fast Heating: about 12–13 minutes.
  • E61 group: allow 15–20 minutes before the group is fully hot.

The Pro 300 shows FLU when it is time to flush and rdY when the machine is ready. The Ride and GO show Flush and then Ready Go.

ECO mode

ECO switches off the heating after a period without use. The machine may then look switched off.

  • Profitec Pro 300: 90 minutes from the factory, adjustable from 0–600 minutes in steps of 30. Wake it with the coffee switch or by switching it off and on.
  • Rocket Giotto and Mozzafiato FAST: 30 minutes, all elements are switched off. Wake it by lifting and lowering the brew lever.
  • Rocket R58 with ECO: switches off 90 minutes after the last shot. Wake it with the brew lever.

Troubleshooting

  • The temperature fluctuates by a degree or so after brewing or steaming: normal. Cold water comes in and the PID heats it back up.
  • Never reaches the set point: check that ECO has not kicked in and that there is water in the tank. Limescale in the boiler reduces the heating output.
  • The display shows an error or nothing at all: see Error codes for Rocket and Profitec and Electrical faults.
