Grinder with a scale: calibration and troubleshooting

A grind-by-weight grinder weighs the coffee while it grinds and stops at the set weight. This gives a more consistent dose than a timer, but the scale must be clean and calibrated.

How it works

A load cell sits in the fork or under the grounds bin. The Eureka Mignon Libra and Atom W weigh on the portafilter fork, and the dose is set in tenths of a gram. The Baratza Sette 270Wi and Forte weigh on the arms or the platform. The scale tares itself before every grind. Towards the end, the grinder slows down to hit the weight.

When new, the Sette 270Wi needs 3-4 grinds to learn to hit the weight, and it does not dose accurately if there is only one dose of beans in the hopper. Keep at least two doses in the hopper.

Calibrating the scale

Only calibrate when the weight drifts. You will need a calibration weight.

Eureka Mignon Libra

  1. Hold down buttons 13 and 14 for about 7 seconds. The display shows the test weight, 20 g from the factory. Change it if necessary with buttons 12 and 13.
  2. Place the portafilter in the fork and press button 15 to tare. The display stops flashing.
  3. Place the test weight in the portafilter.
  4. Hold down 13 and 14 for a few seconds to save.

Eureka Atom W 65/75

  1. Hold down the calibration button for 3 seconds. Set the test weight.
  2. Place the portafilter in the fork, press tare and wait 2 seconds.
  3. Add the test weight, wait 2 seconds and press calibrate. A green tick means done, a red cross means it failed.

Baratza Sette 270Wi and Forte

  • Sette 270Wi (500 g weight): hold down Preset 1 and plug in the grinder until CAL is shown. Place the empty grounds bin on the arms, press Stop to tare, add the weight and press Start when the display alternates between CAL and 500. End means done. E05 means an unstable surface, start again.
  • Forte (200 g weight): clean the platform and check that the screws are tight. Hold down Preset 1 and 2 while plugging in, press the manual mode button until CAL and 200g are shown, then place the weight on it. PASS followed by 000 means done. Unplug and plug back in to save.

The weight is wrong

  • Coffee or dirt under the fork, the arms or the platform: clean and check again.
  • The grinder is standing unevenly or on an unstable surface.
  • The portafilter is seated incorrectly. The Eureka will not start in that case.
  • A large change in grind setting on the Sette 270Wi: Baratza specifies a soft reset so that the grinder relearns.
  • Forte Err 001: the weight exceeds the target. Err 003: the scale is overloaded, refit the bin so it sits level. Err 004: the scale gives no signal, contact service.
  • The Eureka stops mid-grind: the scale does not detect the weight increasing. Check that coffee is coming out and that the fork is not touching anything.

Cleaning the scale

Brush coffee off the fork and scale daily. Wipe with a dry or slightly damp cloth and only use food-safe products. Never run water over the scale and do not press hard on the fork, as the load cell is sensitive. The Bentwood x Rocket H75 GBW manual does not describe calibration, so contact us if the weight drifts.

Clean the burrs and grinding chamber as described in Cleaning your coffee grinder.
