The story behind Sumatra Gayo Indonesia - Whole Beans Light Roast for Filter Brewing 250g

Sumatra Gayo comes from the fertile and high-lying Gayo region in northern Sumatra, Indonesia – an area known for its unique microclimate, traditional production methods, and strong coffee identity. The coffee is grown by the Gayo Permata Cooperative, a cooperative that brings together small-scale farmers with a shared commitment to sustainable and quality-driven coffee production.

What makes this coffee particularly interesting is the processing: the wet-hulled method typical of Indonesia. This method involves peeling the coffee beans while they still have high moisture content, which gives a rustic and deep flavor expression. This tradition is part of the cultural identity of the region and has been shaped by the climate, logistics, and local craftsmanship.

The roasting is carried out by Budha Coffee Roastery, which with its Giesen W15 brings out the nuances of citrus, herbs, and sweetness without losing the strong body characteristic of Sumatra’s coffee.

Sumatra Gayo is more than just a coffee – it is an expression of a heritage, a climate, and a people who through generations have developed a unique flavor profile loved by coffee enthusiasts worldwide.

Coffee's process

1. Origin & type
This coffee comes from northern Sumatra and is grown by the cooperative Gayo Permata, where small-scale farmers work with traditional methods. The beans are 100% arabica, grown in fertile, organic soil between 1200–1600 meters above sea level.

2. Process
Sumatra Gayo is processed using the typically Indonesian wet hulling method, where the coffee is hulled at a higher moisture content than usual. This gives a distinct, full-bodied, and earthy character, with herbal notes and a long aftertaste.

3. Roasting & brewing
The coffee is roasted by Budha Coffee Roastery with a Giesen W15 and is excellent for filter brewing – both electric and manual brewers. The medium-light roast brings out notes of orange, bergamot, and a spicy body.
