The shape of the filter and the internal ribs directly affect the taste of the coffee and are therefore extremely important. But improving the manufacturing of these shapes in glass presented quite a few obstacles and required innovation on our part. Fortunately, HARIO started as a company specializing in heat-resistant glass, so we used that expertise from a century of experience, and after a lot of time improving the production process, the V60 heat-resistant glass was finally released in 2009.
V60 Function 1: Conform
The characteristic conical shape of the V60 makes the layer of coffee beans thicker than on the flat surface of a traditional trapezoidal coffee maker. The shape allows hot water to flow towards the center, allowing it to stay in contact with the coffee beans for longer and ensure a proper extraction of flavor and aromatics from the coffee beans.
V60 Feature 2: Spiral Ribs
When the coffee is saturated, the high ribs do not prevent its expansion, and an air layer is created between the paper filter and the wall of the coffee maker. The spiral ribs prevent the paper and coffee maker from sticking together, allowing air to flow through and allowing for proper extraction, resulting in a smooth and smooth brew.
V60 Feature 3: A Single Hole Opening
The V60 has a large hole opening at the bottom, unlike several smaller holes seen in, for example, traditional trapezoidal coffee makers. This allows the tip of the filter paper to protrude through the hole, which in turn allows the hot water to perform an extraction closer to that of a cloth filter, as it is not limited by the coffee maker. By changing the pour speed, you can brew coffee with your preferred taste, stronger or milder.
